81 Great Lakes Drownings
Dairyland Water Safety Class Sunday this Sunday
Surf Rescue exec wins Community Service Award
GREAT LAKES, USA
– The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project
(GLSRP) announces its current drowning statistics,
“Water Safety Surf Rescue” class Sunday in Sheboygan, WI, and winner of the
2012 “Outstanding Service to the Great Lakes Community” award, Bob Pratt.
81 GREAT LAKES DROWNINGS – WATER SAFETY THIS LABOR DAY
WEEKEND
On Thursday, Brian
Rolston, 16, became the 81st person to drown in the Great Lakes when
he was swimming in shallow water but in heavy surf at Van’s Beach and a rip current
swept him into deep water and he slipped beneath the surface.
To date in 2012, there have been 81
drownings on the Great Lakes. On this
date last year there were only 62. Overall there have been 242 drownings
since 2010 with at least two cases pending (07/16
John Doe M-6 Rainbow Beach, Chicago and 07/14
Stanley Zheng, 18-M, North Avenue Beach, Chicago) [Press Release with All Drowning Statistics].
“Although some may think summer’s
almost over, we could still have a lot of warm weather and drownings continuing
into the fall,” said David Benjamin, executive director of the Great Lakes Surf
Rescue Project. “This time last year we were at sixty-two of two-thousand-eleven’s
eighty-seven. Imagine another
twenty-five drownings between now and the end of the year. That would be one-hundred-seven. We’ve already had way too many.”
“There are several issues going
on,” said Bob Pratt executive director of the Great Lakes Surf Rescue
Project. “The three biggest factors are
ignorance, bravado, and inattention by parents.
Respect the power of the Lakes, know your swimming abilities, and keep
your children at arm’s length when in and around the water. It’s important to always supervise your
children around any water activities.”

GREAT LAKES COMMUNITY
SERVICE AWARD
The
Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project’s, Bob Pratt,
has been selected as the 2012 “Outstanding Service to the Great Lakes
Community” award presented by the Dairyland Surf Classic (aka “D-Land”)
in Sheboygan,
WI.
“The
award is designed to reward individuals that selflessly give to the surfing sport
and lifestyle – To those who give more to surfing than they take,” said Larry
“Longboard” Williams, Dairyland Surf Classic co-organizer. “It’s for those who
are known throughout the Great Lakes surf community for their positive attitude
and contributions to freshwater surfing.”
According
to Williams, the award is only given once in a surfer’s lifetime as a way of
saying thank you for bringing happiness to so many in the community. Pratt will
receive the award Saturday, September 1, at the Dairyland Surf Classic’s awards
banquet.
“Wow.
What an honor,” said Bob Pratt, GLSRP executive director. “I'm speechless...
And thank you!”
“D-Land
is the largest gathering of freshwater
surfers in the world,” said co-organizer Lee “Waterflea” Williams.
“The main focus has always been the gathering of surfers from all the Great
Lakes to share stories, photos and celebrate the passion we all share and love.
Most of us have surfed many breaks around the world but this, the Great Lakes,
is what we call home.”
About the Dairyland

Surf Classic was created to share the "stoke" and
"Aloha Spirit" of surfing the Great Lakes. It’s known as "the
